Spectacled Caiman

Common names: Spectacled Caiman. Scientific names: Caiman crocodilus. Distinctive characters: males 2 to 2.5 meters long, females 1.4 meters. Have a bony ridge between the eyes which looks like a pair of spectacles. Distribution: Central & South America. Habit: Gregarious in favourable condition. When food is scarce become belligerent and aggressive. Habitat: low land wetland & riverine habitat. Food: fish, small invertebrates and small animals. Breeding: breed at end of dry season. This is advantageous because by the time the eggs hatch, the water holes, swamps, savannahs will be filled with water & teeming with aquatic life. Two or more female nest commonly in the same mound. Status: IUCN-least concern.
