Environment. Physiographically, Kerala has three natural regions, namely the narrow stretch of lowlands covering the coastal belt (10 per cent of land area, altitudes 0-7 m above mean sea level), the midlands with foot hills and plains (42 per cent of the total land area, altitudes 8-75 m above msl) and the mountainous uplands and highlands (48 per cent of the total land area, altitudes between 75-2694 m above msl).
