Koovalam Wood apple Aegle marmelos
Its mythological link to Lord Shiva makes 'Koovalam', a scared plant to Hindus. The garland made of Koovalam leaves are very special to Lord Shiva and is planted in the premises of temples. Very much known for its medicinal properties, unripe or half ripe fruits are used as astringent, digestive, cardiac depressant and stomachic. Its cooled aromatic pulp can be used as Sherbet. Leaves can be used to cure diabetes, inflammation, Asthma, cough, diarrhea, intestinal parasites, dysentery and constipation. The fruits are edible. The bark of the tree is toxic.
