The papaya is the fruit of the plant Carica papaya. It is a huge plant, with a single stem growing from five to ten metres (sixteen to thirty three feet) tall, with spirally arranged leaves confined to the top of the trunk. The ripe fruit is usually eaten raw, without skin or seeds. The unripe green fruit of papaya have to be eaten cooked, usually in salads or curries. It has a high amount of pectin, which can be used to make jellies. Papaya has many uses, including as food, as cooking aid, in medicine.
