Sports in Goa. Cricket and Soccer are very popular in Goa. Soccer is played from professional level to kickabout in any open space. Professional matches are played in Panaji and Margao in large stadia attracting vast crowds; the latter holds 40,000 spectators. The season is from October to March and details of matches are published in the local papers. The top class game tickets are Rs 50, but they are sold for much more on the black market. The crowds generate tremendous fervour for the big matches, and standards are improving. African players are now featuring more frequently with Indian teams and monthly salaries have risen to over Rs 60,000 per month, a very good wage by Indian standards.
