Lizards in Goa. In houses everywhere you cannot fail to see the Gecko (Hemidactylus) on the wall. There are several species of this small, totally harmless, primitive lizard which is active after dark getting rid of undesirable insects. One falling on your head is thought to bring luck! At the other end of the scale is the Monitor (Varanus), which can be up to 2m in length. There are several species in India and they vary from a colourful black and yellow to plain or speckled brown. Sadly, they are being threatened with extinction in Goa as people are killing them to eat.
